grocery shopping

i hate grocery shopping.  you know, the planning, the driving around, the excuses, the time commitment, the letdown, and the eventual leftover baggage.  it's really a big ordeal for me.

first, there's the list-making.  you have to determine what you need and what you want.  or you can just go in cold: you'll know what you want when you get there.  some of us only think ahead for the week-- short-term fixes--while some can plan ahead for years.  then there's the temptations once you're shopping, what looks (and sometimes smells) appealing but you know it's not good for you.  food like that usually goes straight to your hips.  or just leaves you with a tummy ache and heartburn.

then, you have decide where to go.  somewhere large that's well-stocked but the quality is questionable?  perhaps a smaller, local market where you have to wear the right clothes and are judged by what you leave with?  or maybe just a quick drop-by wherever is convenient?  sometimes you just never know.  or maybe you're the type that shops with a friend to make the trip more exciting.  i prefer the solo excurisions, personally.

if you're like me, the excuses soon start piling up though.  often, i decide to make the effort tomorrow.  afterall, i can't starve the rest of my life.  but, the day wears me down, i decide i'm too tired, i'm not in the right mindset to deal with people and options, so i decide to go another time.  that's when you start making bad choices: you start grab-buying, anything sounds good enough, and sooner than later you start resenting grocery shopping even more.

eventually, you'll make it to the grocery store with list in hand (or head) and you begin.  maybe you start at the produce section-- full of fresh choices and implied expiration dates.  healthy carrots? no. refreshing cucumbers? no. tall celery? sure.  so there you are, eyeing the celery.  the newest stock is presented in the front; the older, been-around-a-while celery is moved to the back to either expire or be selected later by more forgiving eyes.  maybe you look for a slim package, light-weight but all you really need.  or maybe you prefer stockier stems.  but, be careful which one you choose.  i mean, you can walk around with celery for a while, give it a good squeeze before deciding it's not really right for you.  you might release it where it doesn't quite fit in (perhaps the scattered bulk foods, or the domestic cake-decorating aisle) or your good heart will let it down gently and place it back in its home--unspoiled and hopeful for another chance to be a shopper's desire.  and despite the cruelty, you can leave it at the checkout stand, just seconds away from true commitment before your credit card seals the deal.  however, it's just cruel to take it home and then bring it back-- it may never resell, since other shoppers will prefer new products in case yours has been "damaged."

there are times i return home from grocery shopping with seemingly nothing for all my efforts.  other times, i end up with way more than i expected.  sometimes everything was just perfect and you don't have to go grocery shopping for a while; sometimes you  have to make room; sometimes you forgot something really important.  i am often frustrated.  i envy other shoppers for their efficiency and ability to find exactly what they're looking for.  i am often discouraged, leave the grocery store grumpy and unsatisfied to head home and bask in what little i have from past experiences (leftover tidbits or remnants from a fancy appetizer).  i wonder what other people think of grocery shopping, how often and when they find time and energy.  perhaps this is why i rarely go, prefering instead the short and sporadic attempts at nutrition and sustenance.

i hate grocery shopping.

aren't there better things to do instead?

the goods: reese's minis

walking through the grocery store, i stopped and drooled over the chocolate i cannot have. i also realized, about 15 seconds into my dead stare, that i was also smiling-- like BEAMING-- ear to ear at the mini reese's. now that, readers, is just crazy.

the goods: fast food

since my diet started last june, I can count on one hand the number of times I've eaten fast food. considering I used to dine on potato wedges at least once a week, I think I have improved greatly.

today I decided to walk to lunch-- looking around, I had an array of choices, but ultimately decided on Wendy's. I remember when the Wendy's in Eagle opened and getting a small frosty (chocolate was the only flavor then) was like a plastic cup of heaven. anyway, today I strolled into Wendy's (sadly, not the one in Eagle), inhaled the aroma of sizzling grease and batter and heart attacks waiting to happen, and ordered my delicious meal.

well, the vitamin water was mine.

omfg I love French fries. I was totally the creeper nearly moaning in the corner with pleasure.

the goods: furry companions

yesterday, I sprinkled some leftover popcorn on my balcony for the frolicking squirrels. what I didn't anticipate: abundant squirrel turds.

the goods: FRS

when I started this challenge, I knew food would probably be my #1 most appreciated item of this month. let's throw in a drink for good measure.

orange isn't too bad either.

the goods: snacks

on Sunday, I worked with one of my favorite pharmacists-- and due to a sick twist of fate, I only see her every couple of weeks. so for our 8 hour workday aka "the Asians take over the pharmacy and don't even give free massages" day, we decided to bring some snacks to make the day even better.

I made a pizza dip with cream cheese, pizza sauce, cheese, and pizza toppings. the pharmacist brought a nice greens salad and crusty bread for dipping-- and she brought white chocolate chip cranberry cookies for dessert. so yummy.

I love days at work when I'm reminded of the awesome people I work with.

the goods: reunion with carbs

after denying myself carbs for weeks last year, I've slowly reintroduced myself to eating pasta without feeling guilty and punishing myself with a strict calorie intake for days after. for example, I ate nachos last night so this morning I only ate 1 egg for breakfast and a piece of turkey and yogurt for lunch. the self-inflicted torture must stop!

tonight, I made a bowtie pasta with garlic, onions, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning, adele's Italian chicken sausage, white beans, and mushrooms. it might look a little strange, but the mix of flavorful foods guaranteed I didn't consume more than a cup's worth.

hello, pasta. I missed you.

the goods: pho

warm, salty, noodles, protein, slightly spicy, crunchy bean sprouts, and made with love by communists. I enjoyed a hearty bowl tonight with friends.

new: all hallows eve @ bulls head pub

this year, Amy and I both tried something new: dressing up and going out for Halloween! I was a cowgirl, and she was a cat. I was super stoked to buy my boots and denim cutoffs for super cheap-- under $25 for both items-- and I owned or borrowed the remaining parts.

i even curled my hair in little ringlets for tonight!

here's Amy:

we chose the bulls head pub in meridian for our halloween destination. the no-smoking atmosphere was awesome! so nice to come home and not smell like marlboro man's armpit. we split some nachos and laughed at the comedy show--Gabriel something (he's been on comedy central)-- and grooved to the dueling pianos afterward. Amy put on a sad frown until I requested "jet airliner" by Steve miller band for her.

a fun night! so glad to experience something new with a good friend.

new: apple raisin cookies

tonight, I bought the ingredients for a new recipe from "everyday food" magazine (I bought a subscription for myself and mom last year for Christmas). I spent a little over $5 for everything-- plus two yogurts for tomorrow. I LOVE and so appreciate winco's bulk foods section.

cooking lesson moment #1: wow, I must not cook with nutmeg and raisins and etc much because I had to buy it all!

of course I had to treat myself to a caramel hot chocolate (quite a cup of happiness for 38 cents).

and then the baking started.

cooking lesson moment #2: I have absolutely no counter space in my kitchen. giant sad face with small tear.

cooking lesson moment #3: after all these years, I do not own a spatula. yes, that is a rice paddle. it worked just fine. high five to my people.

this is actually two "news" in one. I'm taking my cookies to work tomorrow to share with my coworkers. pretty sure everyone but me has brought in a handmade goodie... so eat up, kids.

summer day 91

mope city today. perhaps being the last one in my different circles of friends to be engaged/married has affected me in strange ways. perhaps my break from the gym tanked my energy levels. perhaps feeling alone--and not wanting to be alone anymore--means looking alone and that means being alone.

also, the end of this newest blogging venture saddens me a little. here's to the last 3 months.

summer day 29

this is the kind of crap I am bombarded with daily. I could eat an apple for a snack for 89 cents...but for just 11 cents more (plus tax), I could revel in the savory goodness of 3 Oreo cakesters or a tube of crunchy salty pringles.

I'm trying to pretend that this string cheese is really a jumbo pepperoni stick. I'll let you know how that goes...
